Lee Morgan - "Blue Train"

Lee MorganLee Morgan, a trumpet player of enormous technique and invention, emerged on the scene in the mid '50s with a sound reminiscent of Clifford Brown, and quickly developed his own style, fusing classic bebop motifs with more modern rhythms, harmonies and melodies. Born July 10, 1938, in Philadelphia, Morgan studied privately and was playing professionally by 15. In the summer of 1956 he joined Dizzy Gillespie's big band leaving in '58 to join Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. That year he recorded Presenting Lee Morgan for Blue Note, his first of nearly 30 albums for the label. Morgan's largest success was 1963's Sidewinder. After another stint with Blakey from 1964-'65, he worked solely as a frontman. Morgan appeared as a sideman on such classic jazz albums as Gillespie's Night In Tunisia, Blakey's Moanin', and Coltrane's Blue Trane. On February 19th, 1972, Lee Morgan was killed onstage by his common-law wife, Helen More. He was 33 years old.
