Bobby Shew - "If The Shew Fits"

Bobby ShewBobby Shew, a self-taught trumpet player, was playing semi-professionally by age thirteen. While in the military, Bobby was the jazz soloist with the famed NORAD band. In 1964, after his discharge, he joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. The following year he moved on to Woody Herman, then Buddy Rich, and for the next nine years, gigged hotels and casinos in Las Vegas. In 1973, he moved to Los Angeles, doing studio work and playing in the combos of Bud Shank, Art Pepper, Horace Silver, Frank Strazzeri, Barry Zweig, and Chuck Flores. He also worked as lead trumpet and soloist with the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin big band, Don Menza's band and the Capp-Pierce Juggernaut. In the late 70s, Bobby toured Europe with Louie Bellson's big band, appearing on some of the live recordings, including “Dynamite!” in 1979 and “London Scene” in 1980. In the 80s Shew's playing was mostly in small groups, as both sideman and leader. Bobby has also recorded many of his own albums including "Outstanding In His Field" which was nominated for a Grammy in 1980.
